AMA | October 2026

Welcome to the October 2026 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

  1. Your answer about time in the massless early universe was very unsatisfactory. You say that if you had mirrors you could bounce photons off the mirrors and measure time, but there were no mirrors in that early state and it would not be possible to have a mirror, so it was not possible to measure time that way in the massless early universe. You said that time was passing at a “center of mass” for two particles, but again they were massless, so maybe you meant a center of momentum? No, not even that “center” would measure time. X(-1) You said “time was definitely passing.” That’s correct, but it wasn’t passing for any particles because they were all massless and moving at “light speed.” Obviously the state had to change for the Higg’s field to settle and the electroweak symmetry to break, meaning there was a passage of time. So, time passed for the universe as a whole because it was evolving. This is called the “Cosmic Rest Frame” (Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric). The evolving of the universe is one big cosmic clock. Yes, if you had some impossible clock within the universe you could measure ticks, but before the Higg’s field turned on, no time was ticking for anything except the universe as a whole.
