AMA | September 2026

Welcome to the September 2026 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

  1. “Could we theoretically manipulate gravity waves the same way we manipulate radio waves?”
Of course we can. Just wiggling your finger generates gravitational waves.
But those waves are very weak. So weak we can not detect them or use them for anything.

  2. Hello Sean,
Unless I misunderstood you, I heard in the AMA that negative and positive charges are needed to have interference in EM waves unlike in gravitational waves.

But the interference occurs as a result of field vectors in opposite directions cancelling each other out, not at the level of charges. I can create a perfectly good EM wave with field vectors in opposite directions by wiggling just a proton up and down. This wave can interfere with another wave created some distance away by another juggling proton. No negative charges needed. Am I wrong?

I am a big fan of Mindscape! Thank you for your dedication and efforts!

  3. You have said you’re not a mathematical realist. Given your views on many worlds, I find this curious. It seems to me the only reason to accept the physical reality of other branches created by measurement is to be in some sense, a mathematical realist because these other worlds are only justified Mathematically. I believe Tegmark has made this point.

  4. in the discussion, you say: “Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen, they say construct two particles that are entangled with each other, let them go very, very far away, and measure one, and instantly the state of the other one is collapsed to whatever it needs to be to be compatible with the entanglement. You can’t send signals using entangled particles because the person who would detect the second particle doesn’t know that the first one has been detected and observed to be in a certain state. And therefore, as far as they’re concerned, the probability of getting whatever measurement outcome they might get is just whatever it was before. So no signal has been sent.”

but why can’t we imaging that the measurement has been scheduled in advance, so the person who would detect the second particle would know the first one has been detected and observed to be in a certain state.

    what am i missing?

  5. What an incredible luxury it is that Sean Carroll spreads before us, the variety of conversations, experts from so many fields and backgrounds, the AMAs array of points of view, and Sean patiently and charmingly tidying it all up … What can I say…. Sean’s incredubly generous contribution to entropy… A joy, a relief, a bounty!

  6. I was interested in your comments around intellectual property; in particular regarding migration to the public domain soon after creators demise. Is this feeling specific to intellectual property or applicable to property in general? Does this preclude sale of intellectual property rights extend past creators death? If intellectual property is created by a corporation which can exist well past a typical human lifetime, does the property have fp greater value. I know it is complex and no easy answer, but need to be careful making simple statements.
