A map of the galaxy distribution in one slice
of the sky, from the
Sloan
Digital Sky Survey. Different colors indicate different kinds
of galaxies. We are located at the bottom vertex of the cone.
Although there is obviously a rich structure of voids
and filaments, the overall distribution approaches uniformity on
large scales. The distribution thins out far away from us, simply
because galaxies become fainter and harder to find; the true distribution
is approximately uniform.
