Last year they looked at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/3rd_culture\/serpentine07\/serpentine07_index.html\">equations<\/a>; this year they&#8217;re looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/documents\/Edge-Serpentine-MapsGallery\/index.html\">maps<\/a>.  It&#8217;s a playful and broad conception of what constitutes a &#8220;map&#8221;; you will see a few astrophysical examples in there.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an excerpt from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/documents\/Edge-Serpentine-MapsGallery\/large-11.html\">map of the emotions<\/a> by Emanuel Derman, based on Spinoza&#8217;s <em>Ethics<\/em>.
