Not because of any suspected problems with the book &#8212; it sounds great, and I&#8217;m looking forward to reading it.  Only because we <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/2006\/07\/20\/untitled-thomas-pynchon\/\">previously enthused<\/a> back on this very blog when Pynchon&#8217;s last book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Against-Day-Thomas-Pynchon\/dp\/0143112562\/\"><em>Against the Day<\/em><\/a>, came out &#8212; and I still haven&#8217;t gotten around to actually reading it.  Bad blogger.<\/p>\n<p>But this is too cool not to mention (via Andrew Jaffe) &#8212; the good folks at Penguin Books have come out with a &#8220;trailer&#8221; for Pynchon&#8217;s new book.<\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;re wondering &#8212; yes, <a href=\"http:\/\/shelf-life.ew.com\/2009\/08\/11\/thomas-pynchon-speaks-inherent-vice-trailer\/\">that&#8217;s Pynchon reading the voice-over<\/a>.  The man doesn&#8217;t like having his picture taken, which is perfectly understandable, but there&#8217;s no reason not to lend some authorial authority (as well as the actual text) to a video attached to one&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>I notice that Tom Levenson also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Newton-Counterfeiter-Detective-Greatest-Scientist\/dp\/0151012784\/\">did a trailer<\/a> for <em>Newton &amp; the Counterfeiter<\/em>.
