{"id":2052,"date":"2008-11-20T18:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-21T00:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/2008\/11\/20\/the-man-who-observes-the-universe-smokes-viceroys\/"},"modified":"2008-11-20T18:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-11-21T00:07:00","slug":"the-man-who-observes-the-universe-smokes-viceroys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/20\/the-man-who-observes-the-universe-smokes-viceroys\/","title":{"rendered":"The Man Who Observes the Universe Smokes Viceroys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/2008\/11\/19\/kicking-it-old-school\/\">classic astronomical images<\/a>, I did a tiny double-take at this great 1959 ad for Viceroy cigarettes &#8212; one of an impressive collection of examples where science was appropriated in the cause of attracting more smokers, over at <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/bioephemera\/2008\/11\/when_science_was_smoking_hot.php\">bioephemera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/elane.stanford.edu\/images\/exhibits\/tobacco\/viceroy\/manwhothinksofhimselfknowsL.jpg\"> <img src='http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/files\/2008\/11\/viceroythinks.jpg' alt='viceroythinks.jpg' \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anyone who reads a lot of books on astronomy recognizes that guy in the background, or at least the image from which he is derived &#8212; that&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/site\/misc\/classics2.shtml\">Edwin Hubble<\/a> at the 48&#8243; Schmidt telescope at Mt. Palomar.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img src='http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/files\/2008\/11\/hubble2.jpg' alt='hubble2.jpg' \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Admittedly, some artistic license was taken.  The guy in the ad is a bit younger, less rumpled, wearing a tie &#8212; perhaps a bit thinner.  Most importantly, the inevitable pipe that accompanies pictures of early-20th-century astronomers has disappeared.
