This is the kind of thing you do when you return from a long trip and are jet-lagged.<\/p>\n<p><img class='center' src='http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/files\/uploads\/rd-vs-lost.jpg' alt='rd-vs-lost.jpg' \/><\/p>\n<p>These are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/spp\/rd\/08pch14.htm\">2008 research budgets for physical sciences<\/a>, in billions of dollars, for the main funding agencies in the U.S.:  the Department of Energy, NASA, and the National Science Foundation.  For helpful comparison purposes, I&#8217;ve also plotted the $14.9 billion that has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/05\/22\/AR2008052203751.html\">misplaced<\/a>  over the course of our reconstruction efforts in Iraq.  Not the cost of the war itself, which has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpriorities.org\/costofwar_home\">over $500 billion<\/a> so far and will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/23551693\/\">well over a trillion<\/a> when all is said and done.  Just the funds that were &#8230; lost.  <a href=\"http:\/\/capitalgainsandgames.com\/blog\/stan-collender\/336\/bush-administrations-teapot-dome\">Embezzled<\/a>, whatever.
