{"id":11882,"date":"2014-03-23T19:00:38","date_gmt":"2014-03-24T02:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/?p=11882"},"modified":"2014-03-23T20:01:17","modified_gmt":"2014-03-24T03:01:17","slug":"naturalness-in-the-nyt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/23\/naturalness-in-the-nyt\/","title":{"rendered":"Naturalness in the NYT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/16\/bicep2-updates\/\">gravitational-wave signatures from inflation<\/a> in the cosmic microwave background, I was invited to <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/23\/when-nature-looks-unnatural\/?pagewanted=all\">contribute a piece to The Stone<\/a> section of the <em>New York Times<\/em>, on &#8220;naturalness&#8221; and how it&#8217;s used in physics. Mostly The Stone is devoted to philosophy, but occasionally they&#8217;ll let an outsider opine about a philosophical-sounding topic.<\/p>\n<p>The hook is obviously the fact that inflation itself is motivated by naturalness:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cosmic inflation is an extraordinary extrapolation. And it was motivated not by any direct contradiction between theory and experiment, but by the simple desire to have a more natural explanation for the conditions of the early universe. If these observations favoring inflation hold up \u2014 a big \u201cif,\u201d of course \u2014 it will represent an enormous triumph for reasoning based on the search for naturalness in physical explanations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I conclude with:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Naturalness is a subtle criterion. In the case of inflationary cosmology, the drive to find a natural theory seems to have paid off handsomely, but perhaps other seemingly unnatural features of our world must simply be accepted.
