For background see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/16\/gravitational-waves-in-the-cosmic-microwave-background\/\">my previous post<\/a>. All of the BICEP2 results and plots are <a href=\"http:\/\/bicepkeck.org\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First, the best fit to <em>r<\/em>, the ratio of gravitational waves to density perturbations:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-r1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-r1.jpeg\" alt=\"bicep-r\" width=\"600\" height=\"590\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-r1.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-r1-300x295.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rumors were right, and r = 0.2 is the best fit (with errors plus .07, minus .05). Here is the power spectrum (amplitude as a function of angular scale on the sky):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-spectrum1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-spectrum1.jpeg\" alt=\"bicep-spectrum\" width=\"600\" height=\"513\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-spectrum1.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/bicep-spectrum1-300x256.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here we have the contours in <em>r\/n<sub>S<\/sub><\/em> space, analogous to the Planck constraints we showed yesterday. Note that this plot crucially allows for &#8220;running&#8221; of the spectrum of density perturbations signal &#8212; the size of the fluctuations changes in a more complicated way than as a power law in wavelength. If running weren&#8217;t included, the different constraints would seem more incompatible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/running_rvsns.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/running_rvsns.png\" alt=\"running_rvsns\" width=\"600\" height=\"459\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/running_rvsns.png 600w, https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/running_rvsns-300x229.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Comparison with other limits (BICEP2 results are black dots at bottom):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/b2_and_previous_limits.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/b2_and_previous_limits.png\" alt=\"b2_and_previous_limits\" width=\"600\" height=\"476\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11858\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/b2_and_previous_limits.png 600w, https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/b2_and_previous_limits-300x238.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, here is a map of the actual B-mode part of the signal:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bicepkeck.org\/#figures\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BICEP2-signal.jpeg\" alt=\"BICEP2-signal\" width=\"594\" height=\"304\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BICEP2-signal.jpeg 594w, https:\/\/preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BICEP2-signal-300x153.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Overall, an amazing result (if it holds up!). It implies that the energy scale of inflation is about 2&#215;10<sup>16<\/sup> GeV &#8212; pretty close to the Planck scale (2&#215;10<sup>18<\/sup> GeV).
