The Flame Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of course <em>you<\/em> know what time is, since you&#8217;ve read <em>From Eternity to Here<\/em> and you don&#8217;t buy into the mysterianist gobbledygook that often accrues to the subject. But not everyone is so fortunate. (Or my sales would have been a lot better.) So Alan Alda has laid down the gauntlet: <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/scienceinsider\/2012\/12\/alan-alda-challenges-scientists-.html\">explain time to an 11-year-old<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second iteration of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org\/the-flame-challenge-2\/\">Flame Challenge<\/a>, so named because the first question asked was &#8220;What is a flame?&#8221; The level of abstraction is a bit higher here, and the challenge correspondingly greater.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/54960967?portrait=0&amp;badge=0&amp;color=c8b3df\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org\/entry-form\/\">The deadline is March 1<\/a>, so plenty of time to come up with a compelling story for those of you who are tempted to rise to the challenge. There are two categories, &#8220;Written&#8221; and &#8220;Visual,&#8221; so don&#8217;t think that you necessarily have to produce a little movie to be the winner.
